    Calliope Hummingbird Rufous Hummingbird
    Calliope Rufous

Hummingbirds start arriving in Monument between the last week in April to the first week in May. When they arrive ... they will be HUNGRY! The Broad-tailed hummingbird shows up first, about mid-April. The Black-chinned hummingbird - the rarest of the four in this area - and the Calliope follow, from the end of May to mid-June. Last to arrive is the Rufous, which turns up in early July.

A little about Hummers: While hummers may perch upon commercial feeders, they routinely hover when taking nourishment from flowers. The birds, which have hollow bones, are unusually muscular for their tiny size. Most hummers measure between two and a half and five inches long, and weigh less than half an ounce. This combination of lightness and muscle power allows them to hover long enough to feed, their wings beating in a figure eight pattern, up to 70 beats per second.

Feeding: Have plenty of feeders on hand. The general recommendation is to use four parts water to one part sugar in hummingbird feeders. In the spring and fall, when the birds are migrating, we recommend using a three to one mixture to provide a richer food source. Do not use red food coloring, packaged powdered sugar mixtures or honey, which can coat the birds’ bills. Clean the feeders with hot water and refill with a fresh sugar and water mix every two to three days to cut down on insects, fermentation and the possibility of disease.

Plant a hummingbird garden: Some of the common perennials hummingbirds love are : Bee balm (Monarda), California fuchsia (Zauschneria californica), Cardinal flower (Lobelia), Catmint (Nepeta) Columbine (Aquilegia), Delphinium (Delphinium), Firecracker penstemon (Penstemon pinifolious), Fireweed (Epilobium angustifolium), Garden phlox (Phlox), Honeysuckle (Lonicera), Indian paintbrush (Castilleja integra), Maltese cross (Lychnis), Salvia (Salvia), Spider flower (Cleome), Sunset hyssop (Agastache rupestris)

Safflower Safflower - Safflower seed is often used as a substitute for black oil sunflower seed. Safflower seed, like black oil sunflower seed, is high in protein and fat; but, unlike black oil sunflower seed, it discourages starlings, grackles, and squirrels from feeding. Safflower seed is a favorite of cardinals and a number of other common bird feeder visitors. Simply mix safflower seed with black oil sunflower seed for a short time to eventually feed safflower seed exclusively.

Millet White Prosso Millet - White proso millet is a major ingredient in many wild bird seed mixes, but it is also wonderful to offer to birds just by itself. The tiny seeds of white proso millet are desirable to many species of birds but it is a hands-down favorite of some species, especially doves, juncos, native sparrows, towhees, quail and bobwhite. An incredibly beautiful bird species, the Western tanager, will devour white proso millet even though they are not generally considered to be attracted to seeds at all.

The outer shell of white proso millet is easily opened by birds with small beaks but is hard enough to protect it from the weather, making it safe to offer it on the ground – exactly where the species it attracts prefer to eat. Or, you can use it liberally in your own custom-blended seed mix, replacing the undesirable fillers found in many of the less expensive commercially available wild bird seed mixes. An added bonus is that there are so many seeds in any size bag of white proso millet, enough to keep your favorite ground-feeding backyard birds happy for quite a long time.

Valencia Peanuts Valencia Peanuts - Valencia Peanuts are peanut halves and whole out of the shell that are raw. Very high quality peanuts that the Jays & squirrels will love. Be the envy of your neighborhood by having all the birds in your yard.

Valencias are a sweet "nut" with (typically) 3 or more small red-skinned kernels to a pod. Valencia peanuts grow in the ground and are actually legumes - not nuts. Most Valencias are grown in eastern New Mexico and west Texas.

Peanut hearts and pieces Peanut Hearts - Many people who add peanuts to the bird food menu in their backyards discover that many species prefer them to the "BOSS" of all wild bird foods, black oil sunflower seeds. Birds enjoy them so much that special "peanut feeders" now exist so that the birds that love them the most – woodpeckers, titmice, chickadees, and nuthatches – have a better chance at keeping them to themselves. These feeders are usually made of wire mesh that require a bird to cling to it in order to get at the peanuts inside, thereby making it more difficult for species like doves and sparrows to eat them.

You can also offer smaller bits, or the hearts of the peanuts, to the smaller birds and doves that enjoy them but can't cling to feeders by offering them in tubular, hopper, or platform feeders if you like. However you offer them, some small bits of peanuts will find their way to the ground below the feeder where they'll be readily gobbled up by all your ground-feeding species.

Simply place a diversionary squirrel feeder with ear corn at least 20 feet from your bird feeders to distract squirrels. Use ear corn to attract deer and other backyard wildlife into your yard.

Note: Avalable by the ear, dozen or any amount.

Cracked Corn Cracked Corn - Cracked corn is traditionally used in a platform or ground feeder or mixed with other seed. Because of its high oil content, cracked corn is considered a "heat" food necessary for the birds' high metabolism. Squirrels also enjoy cracked corn. Place a diversionary squirrel feeder filled with cracked corn at least 20 feet from your bird feeders to distract squirrels. Use cracked corn to attract deer and other backyard wildlife into your yard as well.

Note: Packaged in a 8 and 50lb bags.

hummingbird feeders triple tube feeder nut feeder suet feeder sunflower feeder sqirrel proof feeder Bird Feeders

Feeding the birds and birdwatching is one of the nations fastest growing pastimes. There are many types of feeders and each will attract different birds. The bird seeds and food you put out will also determine which birds (and animals) will come to your feeders. Some birds want to eat on the ground while others prefer eating while hanging upside down!

Our staff can help you choose the right feeder - the size of the holes in a feeder and the length of the perches attract different birds.

Place you feeder in a spot that is easy to see and easy to refill. It is best to place it near cover, such as a thick evergreen tree. The birds will feel safer coming to your feeder. If the birds do not come to your feeder right away, try sprinkling a handful of seed on the ground under the feeder.

Our backyards and gardens will soon be greening…and songbirds are already embarking on a new cycle of life. Create your own bird-friendly habitat with nesting spots, nesting materials, bird foods and water for busy ‘parents’ and their fast growing nestlings.

Accent your retreat with this season’s fresh designs: from bird feeders to garden statuary. And we know you’re passionate about your squirrels--whether you consider them to be friend or foe! We’ve got great squirrel solutions—feeders to stop them and feeders to serve and distract them.
